Cave Village

The village of Spilia is located 30 km from the port of Souda and 38 km from the airport of Chania. It is just 3,5 km from the beautiful beach of Kolymbari and 15 km from Platanias with its rich tourist activity, for every wish of the visitors.
The village is ideally located for excursions to magnificent destinations such as Balos beach and Gramvousa, Falassarna, Sfinari, Elafonisi, Palaiochora, Sougia, etc.

But also in the village there are activities that will win you over.
The church of Panagia(Virgin Mary) Mirtidiotissa dominates the village square with its huge plane trees. Picturesque taverns with local delicacies and the Venetian fountain win the visitors' impressions.
Some nights with Cretan music and traditional dances will excite you.

In the village you will find a pharmacy and a mini market for immediate needs.
A visit to Marathokefala cave, from which the village took its name, will create feelings of awe and devotion as you explore stalactites and stalagmites. Legend has it that the bones of Saint John the Hermit, who lived alone in this cave, are still preserved there.

Halfway up to the top of the hill, on the left is the green “Park of Heroes”, with the marble plaques – tributes to inhabitants of the village who gave their lives in the liberation struggles of the country.
For the lovers of hiking, there is a path (about an hour) that leads to the upper Vuves and the oldest olive tree of the world (3.500- 5.000 years old), which is still bushy and fruitful.
